9 Best Winter Duvets, Tried & Tested in 2023

By Ali Howard

Searches for the best winter duvets are coming in thick and fast, because sadly, winter is not that far away. Sure, a return to colder temperatures might not always be a welcome prospect, but one little ritual we can definitely get behind is swapping out our summer duvet for something altogether more snug. Think of the change in seasons as an opportunity to transform your sleep space into a wonderfully warm and inviting sanctuary that’ll see you through the chilliest winters. You’ve chosen your perfect mattress, you’ve picked out your stylish bedding and crisp white bed sheets – and now’s the time to get the most cosy with a higher-tog winter duvet.

Typically crafted with materials that offer superior insulation, winter duvets are designed to keep us toasty warm. And with the cost-of-living crisis continuing to loom large this autumn/winter, anything that stops us reaching for the dreaded thermostat – or indeed the leccy-guzzling electric blanket – is a godsend.

But the best winter duvets don’t just offer heat retention. Look for products that boast temperature ~regulation~, as well as moisture-wicking properties in order to avoid night sweats. Breathability is a big factor, too, even when you’re after a snuggly feel. Some of the best quality winter duvets manage to be both lightweight and cosy warm, giving you a perfectly comfortable slumber.

It’s worth noting that we don’t all feel the cold to the same degree, and that some of us are naturally hot sleepers, even during the colder months. Which tog rating we choose then comes down to our personal preference, and of course our environment. Some all-season or hybrid products may not be listed as winter duvets specifically, but thanks to their innovative design and makeup, they can prove perfectly warm on winter nights.

SKIP TO: How does a winter duvet differ to other types of duvet? | What type of duvet is best for winter? | What is the warmest tog for a winter duvet? | What is the highest quality winter duvet? | Is a seven-tog duvet warm enough for winter? | Our full winter duvet reviews.

Typically, a winter duvet is one with a tog rating of 10.5 or over, designed specifically to give you optimal warmth during the colder months. Whether made with a feather and down filling – or a synthetic mix – these extra thick and lofty quilts offer superior insulation when you need it most, giving you a snuggly cocoon-like experience no matter how chilly it gets on the outside.

The only real downside of an extra cosy winter duvet is that it can be extra difficult to crawl out from, especially on a chilly Monday morning. You have been warned.

As diverse as the fill materials on offer are (think feather & down, wool, and a host of clever synthetic hollow-fibre and microfibres that mimic the best natural fills), there are also different types of duvet to choose from:

Hannah admits that different togs can be confusing for shoppers, as there’re lots to choose from. “Typically, a winter duvet would be between 13.5 and 15 tog. The 15 tog Silentnight So Snug is a perfect winter duvet for anyone that feels the chill. However, we all run at different temperatures and those who tend to overheat may find a lower tog duvet more comfortable.”

While 15 tog duvet is typically the warmest, we’ve found a product that goes even further: Soak & Sleep’s Essential soft as down duvets can be clipped together to form an impressive 18 tog quilt – although that may prove too toasty, even for our always-cold bones.

Fill materials are everything when you’re thinking about buying a winter duvet, and there are plenty of pros and cons to consider. “The highest quality duvet is usually associated with those made from premium materials, such as high quality down alternatives and microfibre”, says Mary. (A microfibre filled duvet is generally considered to be higher quality than a hollowfibre duvet).

“Plus a high thread count in your duvet casing would feel softer and more luxurious. You get what you pay for really.” Hannah explains that filled duvets offer premium comfort, but this usually comes at a great expense with some products upwards of £600 on offer.

“A Hungarian goose down duvet is renowned for its insulating properties, which help to prevent drafts and cold spots to keep you warm and comfortable all night long, so a goose feather & down duvet is good choice for anyone looking for extremely high quality.”

“I would say a seven-tog duvet is warm enough for autumn, but it may not be warm enough for winter, especially if you are sensitive to the cold”, says Mary. “If you prefer to use a seven-tog duvet, it’s worth considering layering it with a warm blanket. Hannah agrees, telling us that “a seven-tog duvet may be enough throughout the winter for those who overheat during the night. However, we would normally recommend anything above 10.5 for those winter months.”

Best: winter duvet overall.Sizes available: Single, double, king size, super king.Fill type: Synthetic.Tog rating: Up to 10.5.Machine washable? Yes.Tumble dryer friendly? Yes.Guarantee? 1 year guarantee.

We’ll be honest, this high-tech, innovative duvet system isn’t cheap – even with Simba’s generous discount (currently at 25% off). But it really does offer three luxurious duvets in one, meaning it’s the only one you’ll need, year-round. Here’s how: it comprises one 7 tog spring/autumn duvet and one 3.5 tog summer duvet. Cleverly, the two sections can be joined together with nifty corner snaps, ensuring they stay firmly in place within the duvet cover, and giving you an overall tog rating of 10.5 and keeping you perfectly warm in the winter months. Both sections boast a silky, patterned casing and the quality is palpable. Typical of the brand, the 3-in-1 duvet is made with strategic engineering: think Simba renew clusters and a Better Cotton cover with the brand’s Stratos cooling technology. This anti allergy duvet brags heat controlling properties too, and even when it’s doubled up, it proves surprisingly lightweight and breathable – ideal for hot sleepers that still need to feel cosy in winter.

Pros: Sustainably made, versatile – this is the only duvet you’ll need to buy, offers year-round comfort, free, carbon-neutral 3 day delivery

Cons: The initial outlay is expensive.

Customers are saying: “Not cheap but worth the money, our double duvet is lightweight but cosy and I love the adjustability and can feel the quality of the material”.

GLAMOUR star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best: for quality craftsmanship.Sizes available: Double, king, super king.Fill type: Synthetic.Tog rating: Up to 10.5.Machine washable? Yes.Tumble dryer friendly? Yes.Guarantee? 14 nights.

This is another 3-in-1 duvet that promises to give you the most comfortable slumber throughout the changing seasons. Again, it’s not cheap but it is a buy once product designed to last. Scoring points on sustainability, the Emma 4-season duvet is fashioned from a recycled polyester filling, while its 100 per cent cotton casing is naturally soft, hypoallergenic, and breathable. When it comes to tog ratings, the spring/summer section is 3.5 while the autumn/winter layer comes in at seven, giving you a cosy – but not too stuffy – 10.5 tog rating overall. When used as a winter duvet, the clever clip-on system ensures there’s no movement between the two layers. In fact, you wouldn’t know there’s two in there, given it’s so securely fastened.

Pros: Convenient 3-in-1 duvet for all seasons, sustainably made, hypoallergenic

Cons: Expensive, there’s no single duvet option

Customers are saying: “This all seasons duvet is so fluffy and doesn’t lose any of its superb comfort. My husband is a very hot sleeper and I’m a cold sleeper so body temperature is important, but we’re both comfortable all year round.”

GLAMOUR tested review: “It’s another fairly expensive number, but Emma often has big savings so look out for those throughout the year.” Emma Henderson.

Best: Affordable feather & down winter duvet.Sizes available: Single, double, king, super king.Fill type: Duck feather & down.Tog rating: 13.5.Machine washable? Yes.Tumble dryer friendly? Yes.Guarantee? No.

While this traditional winter duvet is a mix of feather and down, it’s worth noting the ratio of its makeup. It’s fashioned from 90 per cent duck feathers and 10 per cent down (these lighter fibres come from the fluffy underbelly of the bird and are therefore much softer – and sought after). But as with all of Dusk’s bedding offering, the duvet is pleasingly affordable. It is also lovely and lightweight and boasts natural insulation, thanks to its organic filling. The duvet is wrapped in a 100 per cent cotton percale casing, which is both crisp and smooth to the touch, while the boxy stitching keeps the feathers and down evenly distributed. Like any feather and down duvet, you’ll need to give it a good shake from time to time, in order to keep it nice and plump. The animal-derived materials may not be to everyone’s liking but as a winter duvet, this one proves luxuriously snuggly and wonderfully warm.

Pros: Affordable for a real feather & down product, lightweight but promises to keep you cosy warm in the winter

Cons: Not a cruelty-free duvet, ratio of down to feathers not as high as some feather & down duvets

Customers are saying: “Cosy and warm, this is a lovely lightweight duvet, but it does lose feathers.”

GLAMOUR star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨

Best: for high quality with a conscience.Sizes available: Single, double, king, super king.Fill type: Reclaimed feather & down.Tog rating: 13.5.Machine washable? Yes.Tumble dryer friendly? Yes.Guarantee? 5 years.

With demand for sustainable bedding increasing by the day, we love to see a product that more than meets our criteria. And this one’s a dream. The duvet is made from the recycled feather (30%) and down (70%) of pre-loved bedding pieces that would otherwise end up in landfill. Now if that gives you the ick, read on: the down is meticulously sorted, thoroughly washed, and then fully heat-treated to both dry and sterilise before it becomes a new premium blend – you could be sleeping under the very finest European feather & down. As a recyclable material, down, for all its softness, is surprisingly durable, and importantly, it maintains its thermal efficiency. Also planet-friendly is the 13.5 tog duvet’s sustainable and ethically sourced cotton casing. Expect a top-quality winter duvet that’s supremely soft and snuggly.

Pros: Eco-friendly, top quality, free standard delivery, naturally lightweight, supremely soft and snuggly

Cons: Nothing from us.

Customers are saying: “We bought this natural duvet in super king size, it is light, fluffy and cosy. I cannot fault this item one bit.”

Best: affordable wool duvet.Sizes available: Single, double, king, super king.Fill type: British wool.Tog rating: 10-12.Machine washable? No, spot clean only.Tumble dryer friendly? No.Guarantee? No.

Wool is all too often overlooked as a duvet filling but the material is known to be hypoallergenic, antibacterial, ultimately biodegradable, and with natural temperature regulating properties, as well as being a wholly sustainable and renewable option. It also boasts a springy makeup, meaning it’ll continuously bounce back when it’s flattened, making it ideal as a fill material. Unapologetically heavyweight, this one feels perfectly snug on a chilly evening and even works in a similar way to a weighted blanket – ideal for night fidgets that could benefit from being tightly tucked in. While the duvet keeps you toasty warm in the winter months, it’s also reliably cooling when you need it. Cleverly, the wool’s complex and layered fibres create pockets that trap the air, circulating heat and enhancing insulation. It’s also naturally moisture-wicking, so despite its heft, you can say goodbye to sticky night sweats.

Pros: Sustainable, natural fillings, temperature regulating, supremely toasty in winter.

Cons: A wool duvets can be high maintenance and apart from a dry clean or a light spot clean, it will need a professional launder, it won’t appreciate a machine wash.

Customers are saying: “This quilt feels so soft and warm. I feel like I’m sleeping at a luxury hotel.”

Best: feather & down alternative.Sizes available: Single, double, king, super king.Fill type: Synthetic.Tog rating: 13.5.Machine washable? Yes.Tumble dryer friendly? Yes.Guarantee? No.

As its name suggests, this is another synthetic winter duvet that successfully mimics real down, and you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s part of a luxurious hotel collection. It boasts a polyester filling that’s made with at least 30 per cent recycled materials, while the casing is also 100 per cent polyester and proves soft and smooth to the touch. As with a real fluffy down product, this is a lovely lightweight and breathable duvet, yet it feels supremely warm at the same time. It boasts a 13.5 tog rating, making it a good choice for hot sleepers, even when the temperature unexpectedly nosedives in the winter. You can expect a top-quality finish from this entirely vegan product, too with fine stitching both on the edges and within the quilt itself, keeping all those bouncy, man-made fibres evenly distributed.

Pros: Lightweight and breathable, feels like real down, pleasingly purse-friendly, free returns

Cons: Nothing of note.

Customers are saying: “So snuggly and warm but lightweight too, comparable to the down duvet I’ve had for years. A great product I wish I’d bought it sooner.”

GLAMOUR tested review: “This extra warm duvet is very much reasonably priced. Having tried them, we’re also a huge fan of the surprisingly lightweight feel of M&S’ synthetic duvets, despite the high tog count.”

Best for: Versatility.Sizes available: Single, double, king, super king.Fill type: Synthetic.Tog rating: 13.5.Machine washable? Yes.Tumble dryer friendly? Yes.Guarantee? 5 years.

Appealing to those of us who like the feel of a luxury down duvet but want to stay completely cruelty-free, and at a fraction of the cost, Soak & Sleep’s offering makes an impressive alternative. It boasts a super-fine microfibre filling that successfully mimics fluffy feathers, thanks to its light and lofty makeup. This one’s also reassuringly allergy friendly with a 100 per cent cotton casing that boasts a 233 thread count. What we love best about this luxe synthetic duvet though, is its versatility: sold separately, you can connect it with other products in the same range to give you a customised level of warmth, going up to a supremely snug 18 tog – although you’d seriously struggle to get out from under that one on the chilliest winter mornings so think carefully before you checkout.

Pros: Affordable, feather-free but feels like real down, hypoallergenic, can be combined with other products to create a warmer duvet.

Cons: No complaints from us.

Customers are saying: “This is a luxury duvet I can really snuggle into, which is perfect. It’s very snug and cosy in the colder months when we’re all concerned about how much heating we have on!”

GLAMOUR star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨

Best for: hot sleepers.Sizes available: Single, double, king, super king.Fill type: Synthetic.Tog rating: 10.5.Machine washable? Yes.Tumble dryer friendly? Yes.Guarantee? 2 years.

You’d be forgiven for being cynical about an all-season duvet – how could it possibly keep you warm enough during the coldest winter months when there are hefty 13.5 tog, and even 15 tog duvets out there? But thanks to its innovative technology, the Nectar duvet proves a great all-rounder, keeping you comfortably cool in the summer months and perfectly warm once the temperature plummets. This one boasts a 10.5 tog rating, making it lighter than some, but what it might lack in bulk, it more than makes up for in softness and importantly, breathability. Its Smartfil core is blended with 20 per cent modal, which is a material derived from natural wood pulp and known for both its breathability and moisture-wicking properties. You can say goodbye to any dust mites, too. The Nectar duvet is ideal for those who want to feel snug but don’t like the feeling of being too penned in. It is also reassuringly non-allergenic.

Pros: Ideal for allergy sufferers, low maintenance, promises year-round comfort, can be machine washed at up to 60 degrees and comes with free delivery

Cons: Might not be warm enough for those who really feel the cold

Customers are saying: “Pleasantly light and breathable and very well made. Our king size duvet offers weightless warmth.”

GLAMOUR tested review: “The Nectar duvet is equal parts warm and breathable and, if you ask us, is a good pick for everyone.” Lucy Smith
