Quilts featured during Sequim art walk

SEQUIM — Among the attractions of August’s First Friday Sequim Art Walk will be a special quilt show at the Sequim Museum & Arts.

The museum, at 544 N. Sequim Ave., features an exhibition in the Judith McInnes Tozzer Art Gallery artwork from the Peninsula Art Quilters, a subgroup of the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club.

The group consists of two dozen local quilters who enjoy the intersection of art and quilting, said Art Walk organizer Renne Emiko Brock.

Their August show will feature one-of-a-kind art quilts inspired by group challenges. Members pick themes then create art quilts in response to them. This year’s themes include a “Lavender Challenge,” “Sequim Granary Challenge,” “Great Masters’ Challenge,” “Sheer Magic” (using transparent materials) and a “Shadow Challenge.”

Members will be in attendance, and some will demonstrate the unusual techniques used in their art quilts. First Friday Art Walk Sequim is a free, self-guided tour of local art venues in Sequim from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the first Friday of every month. Visit SequimArtWalk.com to download and print a map and find special events. The theme color for this Art Walk is yellow. Everyone is encouraged to wear yellow or bright Aloha-printed apparel during the event to celebrate summer, Brock said.

Other special events are:

• Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County’s Sequim Habitat Boutique Store, 213 E. Washington St., will host the Habitat Clallam Art Auction from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. More than 20 unique items are featured. Proceeds support Habitat programs.

• La Petite Maison Blanche, 213 E. Washington St., will host its celebratory ribbon cutting with the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce at 5 p.m.

• First Friday Music Jam, Centennial Place Park on the northeast corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street, will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., hosted by the City Arts Advisory Commission. Audience members are advised to bring chairs.

• The A. Milligan Art Studio and Gallery, 520 N. Sequim Ave., will host guest artist Michael C. Medler, a local photographer and poet. His black-and-white photo collection, “Sequim Backroads,” will be on display in the main gallery and available for purchase, as well as his two collections of poetry, “Boundary Points” and “Cresting the Salish.”

Anne Milligan’s pastel studio will be open with some works in progress and finished pieces on display there as well in the digital studio.

• Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., offers the “Catching the Drift of Nature” art exhibit with John Bertholl and Doc Pangborn.

• Locally Known Cowork, 112 W. Washington St., features artist Emma Gockerell’s pointillism.

• Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N. Sequim Ave., presents “The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood” by Olympic Theatre Arts’ Young Thespians at 7 p.m. The show will continue through Aug. 13 Fridays through Sundays. Tickets are $20, students $15.

• Pacific Mist Books, 122 W. Washington St., offers a mix of new and vintage books, cards and gifts — including local authors and artists.

• Rainshadow Café at 157 W. Cedar St. has live music with Dawn & Steve from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Sequim Spice and Tea, 139 W. Washington St., offers glass, pottery, illustration and photography of local artists along with tea blends, teapots and cups and culinary gifts.

• Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., offers wine and tidbits with local art and live music.

• Soup in the Alley, 138 W. Washington St., features a rotation of local artists, live music and treats.

• Cedarbrook Lavender Gift Shop, 120 W. Washington St., contains lavender products and local artists art and gifts.
